Toxic Cleaning Chemicals Harm Children
It goes without saying that as mothers, we all want what’s best for our children. Our primary concern is for their health, happiness and safety. We spend countless hours ensuring they eat the right foods, lovingly read them stories night after night and have mild panic attacks whenever they take a tumble. It’s all part of motherhood.
Everyday, parents unknowingly expose their kids to at least 1 of 49 potentially toxic chemicals in the home. Considering these alarming statistics, it’s no wonder childhood allergies, illnesses and diseases are on the rapid rise!
Unlike adults, children are more vulnerable to toxic agents that harms their health. Children’s unique route of exposure includes:
Breathing: Little people breathe in more air per unit of body weight than adults. As such, they are more susceptible to chemical exposure through breathing.
Skin: Kids have about double the skin surface of adults per unit of body weight. That makes them mini sponges who soak up all those harsh toxic nasties.
Development: Little developing immune and central nervous systems find it harder to eliminate harsh toxins. So these lurk in kids’ bodies for longer.
Numerous studies show household chemicals have been linked to Asthma, Eczema, Dermatitis and Cancer.
These are studies we cannot ignore. It’s the reason we are so passionate about what we do and why we shout this from as many rooftops as we can find. If we can just save one family from the heartache of an un-healthy child then we’ve done our jobs. In an ideal world, these harsh toxins would be completely banned. Unfortunately we are not there…yet. In the meantime, we’ve compiled a list of the worst offenders so you can take the steps you need to keep your family safe.
So, what are the worst offenders and what can we do to alleviate this unnecessary burden? It’s a difficult task as an average consumer, to decode labels but as a rule of thumb, avoid products which include:
- Formaldehyde, Terpenes, Phenols, Chlorine, Organic Mercurials, Balsams, Aluminium Complexes – these are all known to have carcinogenic effects
- Detergents containing Alkylphenol Ethoxylates (APEs) – they do not degrade completely and are known hormone disruptors
- Detergents containing phosphates which cause algal blooms in waterways
Further to this, washing clothes in detergents can cause children’s skin to become itchy and irritable. Symptoms may arise from direct skin contact with laundry detergents or from the soap residue left on clothing or bedding.
A bad skin reaction may not result from the first time a product is used, but can develop over time. Skin that itches in patches, especially where clothing touches it, may be a sign of an allergic contact dermatitis that may be a result from using certain detergents.
When the body mistakes an ingredient in laundry detergent for harmful bacteria, it initiates an inflammatory response. Fragrances, dyes and preservatives provoke the majority of these adverse skin reactions.
