Mum inspiring mums – Interview with Emma of Wonderful Mama
Sometimes even the super-est of supermums needs a little inspiration to keep them going. That’s why we’ve rounded up two incredible women — Emma Stewart from Wonderful Mama Magazine and the founder of Whole Kids, Monica Meldrum — to ask them about life, family and staying motivated. To all our supermums out there: may the inspiration be with you!
Q: Wonderful Mama is such a powerful voice for mothers seeking to be the best version of themselves. Can you tell us a bit about your journey leading up to the creation of the magazine?
Honestly, its been one hell of a ride. There’s been highs and there’s been really low lows. But do you know what, I wouldn’t change a thing. Every low we have been through has taught me something and has just brought my family closer together. I now know that FAMILY IS EVERYTHING. They will always come first.
WM was kind of born from one of those lows. I was borderline depressed, I had no motivation to be healthy. I’d sit around in my gym clothes all day, never going to the gym. Okay, so I still do that some days 😉 I needed a bit of inspiration in the health and wellbeing department, in the fashion department, in beauty and nutrition. I thought, there’s got to be other mums in the same position looking for a little inspiration so I started WM and the response was amazing.
I’ve always been in business but I have never done anything like this. It’s been the most amazing whirlwind and we’ve never looked back.
I am truly happy now and even if I was to loose everything, as long as I still had family, I know I would still be happy.
Q: Your forum helps to connect inspiring mothers with other inspiring mothers. Can you tell us about some of the women who inspire you?
My mum has always been an inspiration to me. She’s a very successful business woman and a great mum too. It’s all about finding that balance.
I always tell my team, when we interview Victoria Beckham, we’ve ‘made it’. I’m constantly inspired by mums who are able to build a successful career as well as a loving family.
I’m so lucky I get to meet inspiring women everyday in my job.
Q: Since its foundation a year ago, Wonderful Mama has been an empowering voice for mothers. What have been some of the highlights for you?
There’s been so many. I’ve been lucky enough to interview some really inspirational mums. I get super starstruck and SUPER awkward with the celeb mums but really, I love hearing and sharing the stories from your everyday mums conquering huge things in life.
The biggest highlight has been seeing the response we’ve had to launching WM. I never would’ve thought I’d be here, not even one year on, with this amazing community of mums around me.
Q: Leading busy lives as mothers and businesswomen, it can be easy to neglect your health. Do you have any #mumhacks that help you stay healthy and happy?
In all honesty, up until recently, I have definitely neglected my health. It’s so hard to find time as mums but I just discovered a fab exercise class that allows mums to bring their kids along. No excuses. It’s one of those high intensity work outs so it’s only 30 minutes long. When it’s done, it’s done. I can get on with the rest of my day. Find a local class. You might even meet some mama friends there.
One thing that I love and NEED is to walk. Sometimes with my daughter in the stroller, sometimes on my own. It has to be somewhere scenic. Luckily we live right next to a lake. It’s beautiful. I walk down there, think and dream.
Healthy eating is something I’m still working on. Why is unhealthy food so tasty??!! 😉
Q: What do you love to do in your ‘me time’?
Although I talk about making ‘me time’ a priority on WM all the time, it’s something I really need to get better at. I get the mummy/working mummy guilts. But really, without sounding too cheesy, my husband is my best friend, he makes me laugh so much so I’m always with him. Usually we’re watching Netflix in bed eating some kind of unhealthy food.
Q: What is your favourite thing about being a mother?
Seeing them grow. My son just started school and they develop so fast in that first year. He’s writing me cards, we’re reading together.. I love it. My daughter is growing into a force to be reckoned with. It’s her way or the high way. I’d like to say that she gets it from her father, but it’s probably more like me. She is HILARIOUS though and she definitely gets that from her daddy.
Q: Describe your family in five words…
CRAZY, amazing, full-on, loving and loyal.
Q: You’ve taken on many roles in your life. What can we expect from Emma Stewart in the future?
We have some REALLY exciting things coming up for WM in the next 6 months that I cannot wait to share. As for me, I am loving this. WM hasn’t even hit it’s first birthday yet. It’s just the beginning.
